Chapter Nineteen

I was caught entirely off guard by the kiss.

There were a number of things I thought could happen with the fight we were having, but him backing me against a wall and kissing me the way he did was not on the list.

What was even more shocking was my reaction to the kiss.

I didn’t pull away. I didn’t shove him away. I didn’t slap him or resist him in the slightest.

In fact, the way he kissed me made me crave him even more. I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him into me, kissing him deeper. I slipped my tongue into his mouth and teased him, tickling the roof of his mouth and causing goosebumps to rise along his arms.

I moaned slightly, realizing just how badly I had wanted this. I dared to even let myself think that I needed this, even if it was so far out of what I would ever expect that I wouldn’t even dare to think it could have happened.

It was like that was the one thing that had to happen that gave me an outlet. I was able to pour all the frustration over the job into the kiss. All of the anger I had toward Dan. All of the anxiety I felt toward not knowing if I would have another job after this one. It was a lot of emotion that all got poured into the heated moment, and for the first time since I had arrived in Key Largo, I felt like things were going to be okay.

It was as though the most forbidden thing in my world was suddenly the key to making me feel at peace, and I didn’t know how to handle that. The only logical thing I could think to do was pour myself into the kiss harder than ever, to give myself over to passion. I wanted to lose myself in the moment.

And I truly believe I would have if Dan had been sharing the same feelings.

I didn’t know how long the kiss lasted, but it seemed to me that it was cut off almost as quickly as it had started. It was like Dan had the impulse to kiss me and went with it, then he had the sudden realization that this was a bad idea, and he cut it off just as fast.

In an instant, he pulled back from me, taking two steps back into the room and opening the distance between us. He cleared his throat as he did, but he didn’t say anything. Not at first.

He stood there with his chest heaving, and I looked up into his eyes.

His were glossy with need, and the way he looked me over from head to toe made me wonder – hope even – that he would take me into his office and bend me over the desk right then. I was so turned on; I was sure I would have to change my panties. Everything about Dan was hot as hell, and I couldn’t get enough of him.
